Emerald (Smaragdine)
I seek to remind the viewer of their own mortality and the fragility of human life by using cast physical objects that are considered to be valuable, useful, beautiful, sparkly, deeply concentrated, enticing and wonderfully colourful. These enchanted jewel like objects intend to confront utopian ideology.
Synthetics and imitation within the process of making sculpture — due to developing technologies and materials — are enabling a new kind of ‘created’ and are emphasised further by giving the ‘jewels’ a visual past, a history.
