Jugpack
Jugpacks are inspired by and reference the works of Czech graphic artist, ceramist, sculptor and poet Nadežda Plíšková (1934 - 1999).
Not being able to find much information about Plíšková —and with these ‘introuvables’ out of my reach — I sought to gain knowledge of the processes she would have engaged with. I practiced the technique of throwing on a wheel and gained first-hand knowledge of what it felt like to make and wear a Jugpack. As a multi-disciplinary artist, she inspired my interest in pottery and desire to explore its function further.
These Jugpacks have been made to aid research for an extended essay — through writing, helping me understand the ceramic process and what it means for me to be a ‘Potter’, rather than focusing on the object.
With Jugpacks I explore themes of form, function and material. Combining dayglo with earthy materials suggests functional wear, useful accessories and gadgetry. They are functional, but could they really be used? Clay, an obvious but equally fascinating choice of material — heavy, delicate and domestic. I intend to explore these themes further for the upcoming RWA Academician Candidates’ Exhibition that I was selected for in 2020.
